The International Labour Oganization officially presented to the Ministry of Labour and Government of Guyana the report entitled Prospective occupation and skills needs in the Guyanese construction industry, 2022-2026. The report on the construction sector was supported by the International Organization for Migration’ Western Hemisphere Program, through funding from the United States Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration.

Georgetown, 8 September 2022 - The International Organization for Migration, in partnership with the Ministry of Labour, yesterday completed the Introduction to Ethical Recruitment and the IRIS Standards workshops at the Guyana Marriot Hotel.

The International Forum on Digitalization, Migration and Development promoted by IOM and ILO, analyzed how migrant workers are involved in socio-labour dynamics that do not escape the new trends that the future of work presents, and digitalization could contribute to safe, orderly and regular labour migration under decent work conditions.These tools include the creation of innovative digital platforms of public institutions; new systems to process work permits quickly and expeditiously by virtual means, with a focus on the protection of public health; to the adoption of laws that encourage the mobility of "digital nomads", willing to telework from anywhere in the world.

Between 2013-2018 travellers from the Caribbean were recorded as having the highest increase in migration to Guyana when compared to those from Venezuela, Europe, and the United States of America (USA). This is according to a recent report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), titled Planning for Prosperity: Labour Migration and Guyana’s Emerging Economy.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) at a virtual ceremony.

IOM began its ten-day workshop on the IOM Essentials of Migration Management 2.0 (EMM2.0), currently offered to Guyana government officials across several key stakeholder sectors. The EMM2.0 is a global programme on migration management which provides online resources and foundational training to government officials and stakeholders dealing with migration.

A message transmitted in time can save someone’s life. With this premise, the Commission of Migration Authorities (OCAM) of the member countries of the Central America Integration System (SICA), in conjunction with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), developed a regional workshop on emergency and migratory crisis communication. Migration officials from the areas of communication, press, migration control, and care for migrants from 8 different OCAM member countries, participated in a three-day workshop (May 18, 19, and 20) on the essential role of communication in these issues.  

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) participated in a webinar on Labour and Migration in Guyana, hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce Guyana. Participants reviewed actions conducted alongside the Government of Guyana in the area of labour migration in recent times. In the near future, IOM will be releasing two reports that cover labour migration: the Migration Governance Needs Assessment and the Guyana labour study entitled Planning for Prosperity: Labour Migration and Guyana’s Emerging Economy.
