The Caribbean Migration Consultations (CMC) Counter-Trafficking Network holds its second meeting

The meeting included over 50 participants from Caribbean countries, the European Union, and senior representatives of regional and international organizations to discuss and identify effective ways to combat these phenomena in the Caribbean region, through coordinated regional actions.

In this context, on March 11 the DGME and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) presented the “Consular Guide to the Repatriation of Costa Ricans Abroad,” which aims to improve repatriation of Costa Ricans who return to the country after migrating.

IOM supports governments agencies during public consultations on the National Development Plan in Mexico

Puebla, Mexico – IOM, through the Mesoamerica Program, participated in the First Regional Meeting for the Central Zone on the implementation of the “Comprehensive and Sustainable Strategy for the Protection and Integration of People in Contexts of International Mobility.” This initiative is being driven by the Migration Policy Unit (SEGOB) with the goal of promoting the participation of a variety of actors in the consultation process of the development of the National Development Plan 2019-2024 and the National Migration Policy Program of the government of Mexico.

The Migration Governance Framework—What is it, and how can it contribute to my work?

The Migration Governance Framework, known as MiGOF, is a conceptual-institutional framework that incorporates the essential elements for facilitating orderly, safe, regular, and responsible migration and mobility of people through planned and well-managed migration policies. This framework seeks to present, in a consolidated, coherent, and comprehensive way, a set of three principles and three objectives which, if respected and met, would ensure humane and orderly migration and benefit both migrants as well as society in general.

IOM presents technical tools to promote regular migration through universities in El Salvador

San Salvador, El Salvador. – The International Organization for Migration (IOM), through the Regional Migration Program: Mesoamerica – The Caribbean, presented the academic community with two technical tools for information and communication, E-Campus and MigApp, intended to improve the capacity of partners in El Salvador to promote safe, orderly, and regular migration.

IOM organizes Regional Congress on Human Trafficking and Organ Trafficking in Central America

The Secretariat against Sexual Violence, Exploitation, and Human Trafficking of Guatemala and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), with support from Lawyers Without Borders, held the first Regional Congress on human trafficking March 5-6 in Guatemala City, addressing the removal and trafficking of human organs and tissues. Experts and prosecutors from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Belize participated.

IOM promotes labor integration of migrants in Tijuana

Tijuana, Mexico, February 28, 2019.  33 migrants have been hired thanks to the “Second Municipal Job Fair for people in migration contexts” which was held February 27-28 in the Patio Central of the Municipal Palace of Tijuana.  18 businesses with 746 openings participated, and 256 migrants attended.   .

Health professionals will be able to learn about human trafficking through a virtual course from IOM

San José, Costa Rica The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is releasing a new course on human trafficking directed toward health providers. This course offers staff in the health field practical guidance to understand the crime of human trafficking. Additionally, it seeks to build the capacity of staff to recognize possible cases, understand the potential health problems associated with the crime, and be familiar with appropriate tools and focuses for assisting victims and potential victims of human trafficking.

Over a thousand migrants have returned voluntarily with assistance from IOM in Central America

In response to the so-called “migrant caravans” in Central America, in October 2018 the International Organization for Migration (IOM) created a special temporary program to assist the voluntary return of migrants stranded in Mexico or Guatemala who lack the necessary resources to return to their homes. To date, IOM has provided assistance for the voluntary return of 1,195 people, 48 of whom are unaccompanied minors.
